Swiss-EU relations: EU Ambassador Petros Mavromichalis Interview

Progress and challenges in bilateral cooperation

On the occasion of Europe Day 2023, we met with EU Ambassador to Switzerland Petros Mavromichalis to discuss the state of play of Swiss-EU relations and future prospects.

A privileged partnership

The relationship between Switzerland and the EU is unique and multifaceted. It is based on shared values such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as on strong economic and cultural ties. Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but it has concluded a series of bilateral agreements with the EU that cover a wide range of areas, including trade, transport, research and education. These agreements have created a close partnership between the two sides that has benefited both Switzerland and the EU.

Trade and economic cooperation

Trade between Switzerland and the EU is substantial, amounting to over CHF 200 billion per year. Switzerland is the EU's fourth largest trading partner, while the EU is Switzerland's largest trading partner. The two sides benefit from a highly integrated economic area, with minimal barriers to trade.

Cooperation on security and migration

Switzerland and the EU also cooperate closely on security and migration issues. Switzerland is not a member of the Schengen Area, but it has concluded a series of agreements with the EU that allow for close cooperation on border management, law enforcement and counter-terrorism.

Challenges to the partnership

In closing, we discussed the challenges posed by the EU's decision to terminate the Swiss-EU Framework Agreement. Ambassador Mavromichalis expressed his disappointment with the EU's decision, but stressed that the EU remains committed to continuing to work with Switzerland on a range of issues of mutual interest. He also expressed his hope that the two sides will be able to find a way to resolve their differences and move forward with a strengthened partnership. Despite these challenges, the Swiss-EU partnership remains strong and mutually beneficial. Both sides are committed to maintaining and deepening their cooperation in the years to come.
