LaLiga Race for European Places Heats Up After Wins for Celta Vigo and Getafe
Celta Vigo and Getafe CF both boosted their hopes of securing European football next season with victories in their respective LaLiga matches this weekend.
Celta Vigo's Triumph Over Villarreal
Celta Vigo's 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica was their fourth win in their last five league matches.
The decisive goal was scored by Iago Aspas in the 72nd minute, as he converted a penalty awarded after Villarreal defender Aissa Mandi handled the ball in the area.
The win moved Celta Vigo up to eighth place in the LaLiga standings, just two points behind Villarreal in seventh.
Getafe CF's Victory Against Real Valladolid
Getafe CF also claimed a crucial victory, defeating Real Valladolid 2-1 at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.
Enes Ünal opened the scoring for Getafe in the 28th minute, but Real Valladolid equalized through Shon Weissman just two minutes later.
However, Getafe regained the lead in the 62nd minute when Borja Mayoral converted a penalty awarded after Weissman fouled Ünal in the area.
European Ambitions
Both Celta Vigo and Getafe CF are now in contention for a place in next season's UEFA Europa Conference League.
Celta Vigo are currently eighth in the LaLiga standings, while Getafe CF are ninth.
The top six teams in LaLiga automatically qualify for European competition, with the seventh-placed team entering the UEFA Europa Conference League. The eighth-placed team will enter the UEFA Europa Conference League if the Copa del Rey is won by a team already qualified for European competition.
Upcoming Fixtures
Celta Vigo will face Real Madrid in their next LaLiga match, while Getafe CF will travel to face Real Sociedad.
Both matches will be crucial for the two teams' European ambitions.
