Public Hearing Details
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) will hold a public hearing on September 24, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. to receive public comment on proposed amendments to regulations governing blue crab dredging in the Chesapeake Bay.
Proposed Changes
- Reduce the number of dredge boats allowed in the Bay from 900 to 800.
- Establish a new rotational harvest program to reduce the number of days that dredge boats are allowed to operate in certain areas.
- Increase the minimum mesh size for dredge nets to reduce the catch of undersized crabs.
- Implement a new permit system for dredge boats to improve compliance with regulations.
Public Comment
The VMRC encourages the public to attend the hearing and provide comments on the proposed amendments. Comments can also be submitted in writing to the VMRC office at P.O. Box 756, Newport News, VA 23607 or by email to comments@mrc.virginia.gov.
