Two Police Officers Shot Near WIU Campus

Oct. 10, 2023, Macomb, Ill. - Two Western Illinois University police officers were shot early Monday morning while responding to a shots fired call at the WIU dorms, authorities said.
According to Macomb Police Chief Curt Barker, the officers were shot shortly after midnight while responding to the initial call at Thompson Hall. Both officers were hit by gunfire and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect in the shooting was taken into custody. No further information about the suspect has been released yet.
The university issued a safety alert early Monday morning, warning students of the shooting. The alert said the suspect was thought to be armed and dangerous and urged students to shelter in place. The alert was lifted about an hour later.
The university says counseling services will be made available to any students, faculty, or staff who may need them.
The shooting is under investigation by Macomb police.
