Tornado Threats Remain in Oklahoma After 11 Injured, Homes Damaged in Weekend Storms
Immediate Aftermath and Damage Assessment
Oklahoma is still reeling from the effects of severe storms that swept through the state over the weekend, leaving a trail of damage and injuries. The storms spawned tornadoes that touched down in several counties, causing widespread destruction.
As of Monday morning, 11 people have been reported injured, and numerous homes and businesses have been damaged. Emergency crews are still working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected.
Ongoing Tornado Threats
While the immediate danger from the weekend storms has passed, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for much of Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The watch is in effect until 8 pm CST on Monday evening.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay weather-aware and take precautions, such as having a plan for where to seek shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
Recovery and Assistance
The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) has activated the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to coordinate recovery efforts. The EOC is working with local emergency management agencies to provide assistance to those affected by the storms.
The American Red Cross has also set up shelters to provide food, water, and shelter to those who have been displaced from their homes.
Safety Tips
If you are in an area that is under a tornado watch, the NWS recommends that you take the following precautions:
- Stay informed about the latest weather conditions by listening to local news or weather radio.
- Have a plan for where to seek shelter in case of a tornado warning.
- If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or underground.
