Ten dead as Indonesia's Semeru volcano erupts

At least ten people have been killed and dozens injured after Indonesia's Semeru volcano erupted on Saturday, December 4, 2021.

The eruption sent ash and debris up to 40,000 feet into the air, and a pyroclastic flow - a fast-moving cloud of hot gas and ash - raced down the volcano's slopes.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the area, and authorities are warning that the situation is still dangerous.

The eruption is the first major one at Semeru since 2004, when it killed 54 people.
