Sylt's former mayor Häckel is dead

Hermann Häckel, who was mayor of the North Sea island of Sylt from 1983 to 2003, died on Monday at the age of 79. Häckel was a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and was known for his commitment to the island and its people.
During his time as mayor, Häckel oversaw the development of Sylt into one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations. He was also instrumental in the construction of the Hindenburgdamm, which connects Sylt to the mainland.
After his retirement as mayor, Häckel remained active in public life. He was a member of the Sylt district council and was also chairman of the Sylt Tourism Association.
Häckel's death has been met with sadness by the people of Sylt. He was a popular and respected figure who will be greatly missed.
