Cases in Germany: Number of known infections with West Nile virus increases
The number of known infections with West Nile virus in Germany has risen to 11. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Thursday that nine new cases had been reported since the last update on 11 August. The new cases were reported from the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, and Thuringia. The majority of the cases are mild, with only one patient requiring hospital treatment.
What is West Nile virus?
West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever, headache, body aches, and sometimes more severe symptoms such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord). The virus is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who are infected with West Nile virus do not experience any symptoms. However, about 20% of people who are infected will develop mild symptoms, and about 1% of people who are infected will develop severe symptoms.

There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus. Treatment is supportive and may include rest, pain relievers, and fluids. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from West Nile virus:
- Use insect repellent when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
- Eliminate standing water around your home, as this is where mosquitoes breed.
- Report any dead birds to your local health department.
