Nikolas Häckel: Departed Mayor of Sylt passes at 50
The former mayor of Sylt, Nikolas Häckel, has passed away at the age of 50. Häckel served as mayor of the popular North Sea island from 2018 until his resignation in 2022.
Häckel was a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and was known for his commitment to sustainability and tourism. During his time as mayor, he oversaw the construction of a new ferry terminal and the expansion of the island's wind farm. Häckel was also a vocal advocate for the protection of the island's natural environment.
Häckel's death was announced by the current mayor of Sylt, Petra Reiber, who expressed her sadness at the news. "Nikolas Häckel was a dedicated public servant who made significant contributions to the development of Sylt," Reiber said. "He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."
Häckel's cause of death has not yet been released. He is survived by his wife and two children.
