Eredivisie leaders PSV hold Girona in a thrilling pre-season friendly

PSV and Girona FC played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

A competitive match saw both teams create numerous chances, with PSV taking the lead twice but being pegged back by the Spanish side on both occasions.

PSV began brightly, dominating possession and creating the first clear-cut chance of the game when Cody Gakpo's shot was well-saved by Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Luuk de Jong rose highest to meet a cross from Xavi Simons and head home from close range.

Despite going behind, Girona responded well and drew level just five minutes later. Cristhian Stuani was on hand to tap home after PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez spilled a shot from Aleix Garcia.

The game continued to be played at a high tempo, with both teams showing plenty of ambition going forward.

PSV regained the lead in the 35th minute when Simons scored a brilliant individual goal, dribbling past several Girona players before firing into the bottom corner.

However, Girona showed great resilience and once again equalized just before half-time, this time through substitute Valery Fernandez.

The second half was just as entertaining as the first, with both teams continuing to attack with purpose.

PSV had the best chance to win the game in the 75th minute when Gakpo was brought down in the penalty area. However, the Dutch forward saw his spot-kick saved by Gazzaniga.

In the end, the match finished 2-2, with both teams forced to settle for a draw.
