Elsterwerda - An aerial bomb from the Second World War was found in Biehla (Elsterwerda district) on Thursday afternoon. As the district office announced, the bomb was discovered during construction work. The fire brigade and police were on duty.
As a precaution, the surrounding area was evacuated. According to the district office, around 120 residents were affected. They were initially taken to a nearby community center.
The bomb disposal service was on its way to defuse the bomb. It was not yet clear when the residents would be allowed to return to their homes.
The police are asking for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who has observed anything suspicious in the area of the construction site in recent days is requested to contact the police station in Elsterwerda on 03533 4910.
According to the district office, the bomb was found at around 3:30 p.m. during excavation work for a new residential area. Construction workers immediately stopped their work and alerted the authorities.
The fire brigade and police cordoned off the area around the bomb. A bomb disposal squad from Dresden was called in to defuse the explosive device.
